This week's Baler Athletes of the Week are boys' soccer players Abraham Arevalo and Gerardo Ramirez, who are being recognized for their hard work and dedication.
AVID students had a strong first semester, with 21 of the 307 students earning a 4.0 grade point average or above and 181 students earning a 3.0 or higher.
The start of the second semester has signaled the official opening of the bond measure-funded Visual and Performing Arts and Academic (VAPAA) building on the campus of San Benito High School. The building also houses some social science classes. Heather Nichols, division chair of the VAPA Department and a dance educator and advisor, said her department is appreciative of the new building that houses "professional-standard classrooms in dance, visual arts and ceramics."

South County Cal-SOAP will present "Screenagers!" a one-hour movie about teenagers and how they are impacted by the digital era in which we live, on Thursday and Friday, Jan. 11 and 12 from 6:30-7:45 p.m. in the Gilroy High School Theater. Assemblyman Tony Thurmond will be joined at San Benito High School on Friday, Jan. 5 by education leaders and social justice groups for a discussion addressing bullying and providing resources for educators to support LGBTQ students in schools. After an extensive review of potential graduation sites due to campus construction at San Benito High School this coming Spring, the school has decided to relocate the ceremony from the soccer fields adjacent to Andy Hardin Field to Rabobank Stadium in Salinas on Friday, June 8.
Congratulations to San Benito High School District Transportation Supervisor Kristy Bettencourt for being selected as the district's recipient of the Key To Student Success Award sponsored by Superintendent Krystal Lomanto and the San Benito County Office of Education. This is the inaugural presentation of the award. Bettencourt for the following reasons:
- Collaborative work with the SBCOE and North County Joint Unified School District to support their transportation needs.
- Ensuring all students are transported safely to and from school and events.
